Radical Incrementalism

Because what else is there.

Change happens in fits and starts. In loops and swirls. 2 steps forward, 3 steps sideways….

Hype-sters and well-meaning folk alike sell “transformation” that is quite dilute. It’s actually “change” or “insight.” Scholarship shows that even the radically era-defining and science-shaping Charles Darwin had to come up with hundreds of insights in order to have a few good ones. Aha moments are the quintessential “3 steps forward, 100 steps sideways.”

Transformation, if it still means transformation, is possible, but not overnight. You won’t lose weight, get rich, and find true love before dawn tomorrow. You won’t find purpose and meaning and solve all your aches and worries in one “transformational” coaching session. Or one “transformational” book.

It won’t take 21 days.

It may take years.

It may include some helpful coaching session. It may include a ton of great insights. Maybe a shelf of smart books.

As well as years of good, consistent work. I mean, don’t we know this? It’s dedication and sacrifice–I know those works suck compared to the easy pleasure of a sizzling “transformational” 2-part webinar.

I’m open to radical change. Indeed, I seek radical change. I’m also concerned with truth.

Truth is, most amazing change takes time. And effort. Consistently.

Someone may tell you they are tired of incrementalism and now is the time to think big, charge forth with passion, finally manifest that glorious reality.

They are either selling you something, or they are selling themself something. Or, more than likely, both.

Instead, how about embracing the reality in which you live now, and the messiness of making amazing progress going forward. It’s unpredictable. It’s unknown. It’s fun. It’s adventurous. It’s confusing. It’s awesome.

Invest regularly in the glorious approach of moving forward little by little with passionate intensity. You too can slide along the long arc of change.

It starts with a baby step.
