Maintaining a Third Person Perspective on Your Life

We all have voices inside. Is yours kind? Supportive? Welcoming?

In a sense, we have alternative perspectives on our lives whether we like it or not — the inner monologue.

For me, the monologue takes the form of a dialogue — it’s a conversation between a sort of fictional me, and a fictional friend or family member. We discuss a lot of important stuff. Our conversations can be exciting.

But, these are always simplistic versions of the other people — who sort of just play the roll of conversation partner that helps me work out thoughts or feelings. There is a person there, but it’s not a full person.

In the same way sitting across from a therapist in their office, you know there is a full person there, but you don’t know much about them personally.

Also, actually, it seems to me that these fictional people I talk to in my inner dialogue are actually representing parts of me.

And, hey, by the way, your inner monologue may take a very different form — we all have different versions of the inner life.

But, you can guide yours to a helpful third person perspective.

What would be a helpful third person perspective be like? Clear? Patient? Relaxed? Maybe grounded, kind, and happy.
