Before I define them, what do they each mean to you?
Now, here’s my sense of them:
Safety:
To be myself. To make mistakes and be wrong. To be fundamentally accepted as part of the team.
Support:
Advice, encouragement, feedback, joint work.
Inspiration:
Exciting challenges with high standards and aspirations.
Generosity:
Kindness, and giving of time, energy, and attention.
Coaching:
Help people develop stronger skills and level up.
Teaching:
Engaging on helpful new information and creating greater knowledge.
Responsibility:
Courage to take responsibility for the hard things.
Learning:
Always learning.
How to Create This Awesome Team:
1.Model it. Culture starts from the top. Leaders (especially THE leader/top dog) has to own and model these attributes.
2. Focus. Converse about it to get the mental wheels going and focus on it. Create a a structured meeting to go through these as a team. The team meeting has to be engaging and inclusive and interactive.
3. Buy in. Elicit views, opinions, and perspectives to create ownership and buy in. The team meeting has to be engaging and inclusive and interactive.
4. Feedback. Spot it, call it out, encourage it. Feedback positive observations of the team developing these attributes.
5. Repeat and deepen. Start from the top, “model it,” and repeat everything, exploring a little deeper each time through — more meaning, more investment, progress not perfection.
Takes time, and *results not guaranteed, but *results could be amazing.
