Breathing Boldly

What if you brought courage to a breath.

This one, now. Yeah, that one.

Belly out and down. Sides expanding. Chest up.

I’m taller, straighter, stronger.

My breath is:

Deeper, higher, wider, fuller, slower.

What kinds of breaths even happen?

Yawn. Sigh. Gasp. Chortle. Chuckle. Laugh. Guffaw. Wheeze. Sneeze.

In Yoga class I’ve heard them talk of a Ujjayi breath, though I’m not quite sure what that is, yet. I’ve heard them talk of Lion’s Breath, and Ocean Breath.

A lion’s breath contains the hint of a deep and gravely roar.

Ocean waves and breaths ceaselessly shush. Cycling nonstop.

Runners pant. Birds sing. Balloons hiss.

Vacuums suck. Dogs sniff.

Sleepers snore.

If you were to play with your breath, what would you do?

Whisper. Whistle. Something in between–shape the sound like a windy siren.

What qualities of breath can you make?

Raspy. Shallow. Slurpy. Quick. Into your cheeks. Fart noise.

If you were going to live your life in a breath, what would it be?

Open. Soft
